Children of Chernobyl parents have no higher number of DNA mutations

Last modified on Fri 23 Apr 2021 14.28 EDT
For decades popular culture has portrayed babies born to the survivors of nuclear accidents as mutants with additional heads or at high risk of cancers. But now a study of children whose parents were exposed to radiation from the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 suggests they carry no more DNA mutations than children born to any other parents.
The study, published in Science, is one of the first to systematically evaluate alterations in human mutation rates in response to a manmade disaster, such as accidental radiation exposure.
As well as providing fresh insights into how radiation affects the human body, the findings should help reassure other people who may have been exposed to radiation, such as those living near the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan in 2011, that it is safe to return home or have children. ....

In Utero Exposures May Up Thyroid Cancer Risk in Offspring

Jan 22, 2021
WEDNESDAY, Jan. 20, 2021 (HealthDay News) Maternal health and in utero exposures are associated with an increased risk for subsequent thyroid cancer in offspring, according to a study published online Dec. 18 in
The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.
Cari M. Kitahara, Ph.D., from the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland, and colleagues used registry data from four Nordic countries to assess thyroid cancer risk in offspring in relation to maternal medical history, pregnancy complications, and birth characteristics. The analysis included 2,437 cases of first primary thyroid cancer diagnosed from 1973 to 2013 in Denmark, 1987 to 2014 in Finland, 1967 to 2015 in Norway, or 1973 to 2014 in Sweden.
The researchers found that 81.4 percent of patients had papillary carcinomas, 77.1 percent were women, and 56.7 percent were diagnosed before age 30 years. An increased risk for thyroid cancer in offspring was seen with higher birth weight (odds ratio ....

Drop in cancer diagnoses masking an urgent health concern

You’d think that a decrease in cancer diagnoses over the past few months would be good news.
Dig deeper, though, and a more complex truth emerges: It means that preventive medical care has declined since the coronavirus pandemic began.
With stay-at-home orders and concerns about COVID-19 transmission, many people have put off medical screenings. Because cancer and other diseases don’t take vacations, experts urge people not to take time off from routine medical care.
“There has been an estimated 46 percent drop in the number of cancer diagnoses in the U.S. since last spring,” said Thomas Buchholz, M.D., medical director of the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center in San Diego. “That’s a direct consequence of postponing screenings. We’re open for safe cancer screenings. We’ve taken care that screenings, colonoscopies and other tests are safe, so that if people are confronted by cancer, they will be able to tackle it early. ....
