Insurgency has claimed 37,000 lives, displaced 2.2m people in North East, says UN


The Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast, which is in its 12th year, has claimed 37,000 lives and displaced 2.2 million people.
United Nations (UN) Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Edward Kallon, disclosed this at the opening of the maiden UN humanitarian retreat organised to bring lasting peace to the Northeast at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
He said: “At the peak of the crisis, over 2.2 million people were displaced in the BAY States and another 303,963 Nigerian refugees in neighbouring countries in Cameroon, Chad and Niger.
“The situation is also very dynamic and 1.9 million people remain internally displaced in the worst affected states and an estimated 1.6 million people that have returned to relatively safe areas. ....

Lake Chad: FG proposes 3 areas to support development


The Federal Government said the Digital Switch Over is a priority project because it will improve local content, create jobs, curb content monopolies and improve on-demand television to millions of Nigerian households.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed At The Digital Switch Over Stakeholders Meeting in Lagos on Monday.
The Minister disclosed that the DSO has been rolled out in five states so far, adding that the FG is
“kick-starting the new rollout here in Lagos state on April 29th 2021, Kano state on June 3rd 2021 and Rivers state on July 8th 2021. We will then follow up with Yobe state on July 15th 2021 and Gombe state on August 12th 2021.” ....

North-East Nigeria: $1bn needed to cater for 6.4 million people in 2021 - UN


The humanitarian community in Nigeria, led by the United Nations (UN), and the federal government officially launched the north-east Nigeria Humanitarian Response Plan for 2021 on Tuesday.
The plan requests US$1billion to enable partners to provide critical services to the 6.4 million most vulnerable people, among a total of 8.7 million people in need of some form of assistance.
Edward Kallon, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, reiterated that the crisis in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States, remains one of the largest in the world and continues to have a profound impact on the country and the people.
Kallon noted that 2021 marks the twelfth year of the conflict and the sixth year of the international community working together with the government to provide humanitarian support. ....
