ROANOKE, Va. – The weather is very calm compared to what we were tracking on this day three years ago when multiple tornadoes moved through southwest and central Virginia.
The strongest was an EF-3 twister that traveled nearly 26 miles from Timberlake to Elon, causing millions of dollars in damage and resulting in a dozen injuries.

Danville avoids worst of the winter storm

DANVILLE, Va. – Danville today avoided the worst of the wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain that was forecast. The National Weather Service in Blacksburg reports the city received a quarter inch of ice accumulation today. That amount was about half of the total projected. The lower amount is attributed to less moisture developing than expected.
Meteorologist Dennis Sleighter says the main precipitation has exited the area. However, a narrow band of precipitation is expected to push through overnight. This precipitation will be in the form of freezing rain and freezing drizzle. An additional ice accumulation of less than a tenth of an inch is forecast. ....

Freezing rain, sleet and snow expected in latest storm

DANVILLE, Va. – Just as local residents are getting their power back on, another winter storm system is headed to the Southside.
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has the Dan River Region under a Winter Storm Warning from midnight until Friday morning.
Meteorologist Anita Silverman in Blacksburg says this will be a “significant” ice storm, starting after midnight as mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow, changing over to all freezing rain. She says the amount of sleet and snow will be less than an inch but cautions that “the amount of ice by the time we get to the beginning of the morning on Friday will be anywhere from one-third to three-quarters of an inch of ice.” ....

Significant ice storm expected to affect Elkin area

Elkin and the surrounding area is expected to be impacted by a significant ice storm beginning late on tonight and into Thursday.
Meteorologist Mike Sporer with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Virginia said the winter weather forecast for the Elkin area late Wednesday into Thursday would be “primarily a freezing rain event with a significant accumulation of ice.”
Sporer said the system would begin to push up from the southwest around midnight on Wednesday.
“By the time we get to 1 or 2 a.m. it’s going to be precipitating pretty heavily,” Sporer said. ....
