INEC Wants Amended Electoral Bill Passed, Calls for Unbundling of the


In the just concluded week, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said that the Commission was currently overburdened with electoral responsibilities, hence it needs to be unbundled before the conduct of the 2023 general elections on Saturday, February 18, 2023 – as works are in the pipeline to establish Electoral Offences Commission and Tribunal that would take up the responsibility to issue arrest, investigate and prosecute the electoral offenders.
As it stands, INEC’s responsibilities include, but not limited to: registration and regulation of political parties; registration of voters; delineation of constituencies; conduct of elections, by-elections & referendum; and recall & prosecution of electoral offenses. ....

Yakubu Wants INEC Unbundled before 2023 Elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday called for the unbundling of the commission before the conduct of the 2023 elections.
Yakubu said yesterday in Abuja at the public hearing on the Electoral Offences Commission Bill that INEC, as presently constituted, was overburdened with electoral duties.
He added that the commission had secured 60 convictions out of those being prosecuted for 125 electoral offences.
Yakubu expressed disappointment over the delay in the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, saying barely a year and nine months to the 2023 general election, the National Assembly is yet to pass the bill. ....

INEC announces February 18 for 2023 general election

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced February 18 as the date for the 2023 general election in the country. 
Just as it confirmed that the election timetable will be released after Anambra’s governorship election on November 6. 
INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu made the announcement on Wednesday during a one-day public hearing on the National Electoral Offences Commission (Establishment) Bill 2021, organised by the Senate Committee on INEC. 
According to the INEC boss, the 2023 general elections are exactly one year, nine months, two weeks and six days or 660 days from today. 
“By the principle established by the Commission, the 2023 General Election will hold on Saturday 18th February 2023 which is exactly one year, nine months, two weeks and six days or 660 days from today,” he said.  ....

INEC Flays Delay in Passage of Electoral Act Amendment Bill By N' Assembly

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday expressed disappointment over the delay in the passage of the Electoral Act amendment bill, saying barely a year and nine months to the 2023 general election, the National Assembly is yet to pass the Bill.
The INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmoud Yakubu, expressed the displeasure during a public hearing on the Electoral Offences Commission Bill in Abuja.
Yakubu said the 2023 general election will hold on Saturday, 18 February 2023, and the commission is anxious to know the legal framework to govern the conduct of the polls.
He said the timetable for the election would be released immediately after the Anambra governorship election scheduled to hold on November 6, 2021. ....
