EC offcials should be booked for murder: Poll Panel moves Supreme Court against Madras High Court observation

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Saturday (May 1) moved Supreme Court against Madras High Court observations that the poll panel was singularly responsible for surge in coronavirus COVID-19 cases across the country. The poll panel has challeneged the Madras High Court observation where it blasted it for its failure to maintain COVID-19 protocols. 
The poll panel s appeal against the Madras High Court s refusal to entertain its petition opposing the critical remarks will be heard by a bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud on March 3. We have filed an appeal against the high court orders, the counsel for the Election Commission, Amit Sharma, told PTI. ....

New Delhi: After the first major outbreak of violence during West Bengal assembly elections, in which five persons were killed, including four in alleged firing by CISF personnel, the Election Commission on Saturday (April 10) directed the Union Home Ministry to deploy 71 additional companies of Central Armed Police forces (CAPFs) in West Bengal for the conduct of the remaining four phases of polls. 
Senior officials told PTI that the poll panel has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to rush in and deploy the fresh companies immediately. Till now, a total of 1,000 companies were earmarked for the conduct of elections in the state that has 294 assembly seats. ....

EC bars CM Mamata Banerjee, other leaders from visiting violence-hit Cooch Behar district


During an address at an election meeting in Siliguri,
As many as five persons were killed in two seperate incidents of firing in Sitalkuchi assembly constituency during the fourth phase of poll on Saturday, state chief electoral officer Ariz Aftab told PTI.
He said at least eight persons have been arrested so far in connection with two incidents which took place in separate polling stations at Sitalkuchi during the day, he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned the EC s version of the incident and stated that her government will initiate a CID probe into the incident. 
Further, Banerjee demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the firing incident, and wondered whose direct interference into the functioning of the Election Commission and central forces led to the excesses. ....

New Delhi: A day after announcing the dates for assembly elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission on Saturday (February 27) removed Jawed Shamim as the Additional Director General of Police (Law and order).
Jag Mohan was handed over the charge in his place. A 1991-batch IPS officer, Mohan will also be the state police nodal officer.
According to an order by chief electoral officer (CEO) of the state, Shamim, who is a 1995-batch IPS officer, will take place of Mohan as the DG Fire Services in the rank of ADG. He will also hold the charge of DG Civil Defence till further notice, the CEO s order said. ....
