Selectmen and other residents debated Tuesday night over a proposed plaque honoring a poet-civil rights advocate who died in a 1938 Wiscasset car-train crash. The board voted 3-2 to have resident Lucia Droby get the board a cost to consider giving voters to decide in an already anticipated special town meeting this summer.
“(James Weldon Johnson) was doing his work during the Jim Crow era (when) it was very dangerous to be a person of color, particularly a black man, and he devoted his life to serving his arts but also to struggling for racial justice, and we’re in a moment that values that effort,” Droby said in the Zoom meeting. ....

Wiscasset may want details when shops, event-holders, or anyone else asks to take up space on Main Street’s sidewalks. On Zoom Monday night, the ordinance review committee continued drafting a policy for selectmen to consider. Talk turned to the permit application.
ORC members said they would want applicants to say when and how long they would use the space, the number of tables and chairs, if any, and the tables’ size. That would keep everyone informed and avoid date conflicts among users, said committee members and Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission Executive Director Mary Ellen Barnes. ....

Wiscasset keeps Simmons

Wiscasset Selectmen’s Chair Pam Dunning announced Tuesday night, Town Manager Dennis Simmons is six months in and no longer probationary. The whole board is “ecstatic, pretty much, with his performance to date,” Dunning said. “The entire board is very happy (and he) is going to continue with us for a very long time, we are hoping. Not letting him go.”
The announcement live on Zoom and YouTube followed a half hour virtual executive session Simmons arranged for the board in a breakout room. In there, each selectman spoke and Simmons shared some challenges and how he managed them, Dunning reported back in open session afterward. Simmons started last July after John O’Connell resigned. ....

Wiscasset Parks and Recreation Director Duane Goud told selectmen over Zoom Tuesday, Jan. 19, due to COVID-19 crowd limits, neither Winterfest nor the annual father-daughter dance can run on their usual dates. He was not sure Winterfest will happen this year.
Only 50 people can be indoors, and the dance draws 125-175 people, Goud said. As for Winterfest, which Selectman Sarah Whitfield asked about, Goud said: “I’m not sure if we’re going to be able to have it . If we do, we’re going to push it off. It might be toward the end of February.” He is waiting for any updates to the guidelines, he said. Winterfest’s trivia night gets 75-80 people, Goud noted. ....
