During the late 1950s and 60s, artists began to diverge from the painterly, gestural approaches of Abstract Expressionism in favor of what the American art critic Clement Greenberg in 1964 called post-painterly abstraction. Artists moved in a variety of directions, some in pursuit of paintings pure in color and open in composition while others toward structured, linear designs using familiar geometric shapes. Rejecting a loose application of paint, these artists stained their unprimed canvases or created flat planes of color devoid of any distinctive mark making. ....
City Week: Weekly Picks Whew! It s good to be back. Aside from a brief stint where we tried to revive City Week in the fall, then nervously pulled the plug as we watched COVID-19 cases climb, it s been about a year since I put together an event roundup for the Tucson Weekly. It s been so heartening to find that I m having no trouble gathering events and activities to try out. Because, as ever, Tucson is full of passionate people who make music, art and magic every day. We hope you get the chance to start safely experiencing it soon. Art Happenings and Sculpture Event. This art showcase at the Wilde Meyer Gallery is both indoors and outdoors, but, in honor of springtime, it has a special emphasis on outdoor sculpture. UCLA Library Ben Alkaly | April 6, 2021 Gloria Werner, whose 40-year career at UCLA Library culminated with serving as university librarian from 1990 to 2002, died March 5 in Los Angeles. She was 80. “During her distinguished career, Gloria’s future-forward thinking produced innovations that UCLA and other libraries continue to build upon,” said Virginia Steel, Norman and Armena Powell University Librarian. “Hers is a tremendous loss to our academic library community here in California, nationally and internationally. She was a true leader who inspired those who worked with her. We will miss her.” Werner was born Dec. 12, 1940, in Seattle. She discovered a passion for the arts while attending Oberlin College, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art history in 1961. She went on to earn her master of library science degree from the University of Washington in 1962, arriving at UCLA that same year to begin graduate training in m ....
