SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The San Diego Unified School District and The San Diego Foundation announced Wednesday that more than 65 nonprofits will help deliver the newly created Level Up SD program to tens of thousands of San Diego Unified students who will have free access to in-person morning classroom instruction and afternoon summer activities.
Earlier this month, registration began for morning coursework. On Wednesday, registration began for opportunities beyond the classroom at LevelUpSanDiego.org.
Summer school generally is offered to a select group of students who need additional academic support. Level Up SD is open to all K-12 students in San Diego Unified, meaning thousands of local students can now take advantage of summer school and free activities like learning to kayak or learning to fly a drone for the first time. ....

The group’s name stands for Depositing Empowerment Through Outreach and Urban Development.
‘I grew up with six foster sisters who were all younger than me,” Conwright said. “I started to meet with them informally, taking them to breakfast and talking to them about teen topics. That turned into a more formal setting.”
With a staff of nine, DETOUR is based at the Jacobs Center in Encanto and meets at the Skyline recreation center.
The group also has a mentor program for girls in Juvenile Hall.
“I was raised in Southeastern San Diego and it was really important for me to provide additional opportunities for the girls who were coming from a neighborhood I was coming from,” Conwright said. “As I networked outside my community, I learned about new and different opportunities that often people outside of Southeastern San Diego weren’t aware of.” ....

San Diego Foundation grants $750K to encourage STEM education

More than a dozen San Diego County nonprofits will be the recipients of $750,000 in grants from The San Diego Foundation to create more opportunities for youth to study STEM fields.
The foundation is directing funds to 13 programs reaching young people, particularly those from underrepresented communities. The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation recently reported that Latino and Black communities are greatly underrepresented in San Diego’s highest-paying industries and occupations, many of which are related to STEM science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The programs receiving grants are:
San Diego State University Research Foundation, supporting the WE BELIEVE program (Women and Black Empowered Learners Interning in Engineering Environments). The university will provide summer research internships for Black high school and community college students. ....
