In the fall of 2019, then-senior Dana Pepowski (Communication ’20) sought help from AccessibleNU after symptoms of her chronic illnesses began to worsen.
The accessibility counselor she worked with was the first person at Northwestern, and in her life, to ever validate her accessibility needs and illnesses, which are not obviously detectable.
Pepowski said she had very little success in receiving accommodations from school leadership. She has numerous chronic illnesses — including gastroparesis, colonic dysmotility and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome — all of which can cause physical pain or fatigue, impacting her daily functions.
Pepowski said she would often wake up in the morning with chronic pain. Some nights, she wouldn’t sleep at all due to the pain. She said she needed flexibility to miss class or rehearsals when the pain reached an unbearable level. ....

Reform CAPS calls for transparency, improved mental health resources

A group of Northwestern students gathered to paint the Rock during a Monday rally to advocate for improved mental health support.  The participants spray-painted the organization’s title and catchphrase “Reform CAPS” on the Rock, referring to Counseling and Psychological Services. Top three finalists selected for Jr. Carpinterian of the Year


In a year filled with the unexpected, one thing has been constant: the rigorous pursuit for excellence among Carpinteria’s most ambitious teenagers. Among this cohort of exceptional Carpinteria young people are three seniors, Laura Flores, Isa Alarcon and Luke Williams, who have been selected as finalists for Jr. Carpinterian of the Year, an honor bestowed annually to one graduating senior by the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce. 
Flores, Alarcon and Williams have excelled in academics, sports and civic engagement, and each will receive a scholarship from the chamber. The student named Jr. Carpinterian of the Year will receive a $4,000 scholarship and each of the two finalists will receive $1,500 scholarships.  ....

Student leaders vote in support of defunding University Police


At the last meeting of the school year, the Associated Students’ board of directors voted Tuesday to urge Cal State Fullerton to reallocate funds from the University Police Department to mental health services.
The resolution, which passed 11-0 with six members abstaining, called for University Police to ban all aggressive police tactics, lethal firearms and excessive use of force during student events, student protests or any other campus affairs.
Prior to the meeting, Dave Edwards, ASI executive director, said in an email to the Daily Titan on Monday that ASI cannot defund campus police because the university funds the University Police Department. ....
