Joy as Jabiru is returned to Mirarr traditional owners, ending 40-plus year land rights claim

Traditional owners in the Northern Territory are celebrating the return of land rights over the Kakadu township, Jabiru.
Jabiru was established as a mining town and sits just over 250km southeast of Darwin.

The town is home to a vibrant traditional art centre, the home of the notorious Cahills Crossing where fishermen battle crocs for a catch, and on the doorstep of World-Heritage listed Kakadu National Park.
It is hoped the handback will bring certainty to the town s future after mining operations ceased in January.
Senior Mirarr traditional owner Yvonne Margarula spoke at the ceremony in the Indigenous language of Kundjeyhmi, with her message of joy translated as she spoke. ....

There’s a famous image from 1975 of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam pouring red earth into the hands of Gurindji leader, Vincent Lingiari, as a symbolic gesture of returning land back to the Gurindji people. It’s a powerful image and represents an important turning point in Australian land rights policy a point when the federal government finally started to acknowledge that this nation state has been built on stolen land and that it was past time for restitution. But something that really strikes me about this image on a symbolic level, particularly as an academic that has spent their whole career focused on water, is just how dry the earth is. ....

Just as the parliamentary inquiry into Rio Tinto’s destruction of the Juukan Gorge rock shelters was reconvening in Canberra, another culturally significant site was damaged at one of BHP’s iron ore mines in the Pilbara.
This latest rock shelter, a registered site for the Banjima peoples, was reportedly damaged by a rockfall in late January. BHP said the site was not part of its current mining operations and the cause of the rockfall was not known. ....
