War of words erupts over growing CQ housing crisis


Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry is calling on the state Labor members for Rockhampton and Keppel to step up and help Central Queensland’s “housing crisis”.
In a letter addressed to The Morning Bulletin, Ms Landry claimed Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke and Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga had a “if I look away it will go away” attitude to local issues, including Central Queensland’s “housing affordability crisis”.

Record tender awarded to Aboriginal Business Enterprise to build homes in Galiwin'ku

The Territory Labor Government’s groundbreaking remote housing program has reached a new milestone with the awarding of a $51.5 million contract to build 87 homes in Galiwin’ku.
Local Aboriginal Business Enterprise, Bukmak Constructions will carry out the works over five-years, providing apprenticeship and other training opportunities for residents of the remote island community.
The contract also includes extending dozens of existing homes under the innovative Room to Breathe program.
This is the largest single contract awarded to date under the Territory Labor Government’s Remote Housing Investment Package which aims to alleviate overcrowding and improve living conditions; provide sustainable employment; enable economic development opportunities; and engage remote communities through Local Decision Making. ....

Pride in Your Place Awards - Ricky Coulthard

Congratulations to Ricky Coulthard, the first 2021 winner for Territory Families, Housing and Communities’ Pride in Your Place (PIYP) awards.
PIYP is a monthly award to recognise public housing tenants who take pride in their home and yard.
Mr Coulthard’s home was deemed a winner due to his lush green front lawn, an honourable achievement this time of year in Alice Springs.
Remote and urban tenants are eligible to win a monthly prize of a $200 gift card and certificate signed by the Minister for Territory Families and Urban Housing or the Minister for Remote Housing and Town Camps, dependent on the tenant’s location. ....

Construction project to create jobs and deliver homes to remote communities

Having committed to a 42 per cent Aboriginal employment target, contractors will design, construct and install the housing while residents have had input into the types of housing in their communities through the Local Decision Making process.
The houses, which are modular designs, provide an alternative to on-site construction and offer flexibility in delivery and ongoing transportability.
More than 130 homes funded by a previous $68 million investment in this model of housing are now rolling out to 24 remote communities across the NT.
The project is funded under the HomeBuild program as part of the Territory Labor Government’s $1.1 billion Remote Housing Package – Our Communities. Our Future. Our Homes. The Australian Government committed a $550 million co-contribution towards the program in 2019. ....

The Northern Territory Government is using prefabricated homes to ease overcrowding in remote communities, but some are concerned they take construction jobs and training opportunities from Aboriginal Territorians living in remote areas.
Key points:
The NT Government says it has completed 37 of the new-style remote homes and more are on the way
Some residents are happy and the houses can be finished quicker than locally built homes
