DoT to issue guidelines for implementation of PLI in telecom within week

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is likely to issue guidelines on implementation of production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes for manufacturers in the sector and start inviting applications for the same in about a week, according to government officials.
Telecom gear makers firms such as Ericsson and Nokia are keen to expand their operations in India, and global companies like Samsung, Cisco, Ciena and Foxconn have shown interest to set up manufacturing bases in the country for telecom and networking products for domestic and export markets.
Telecom PLI has already been approved by the government. The DoT is ready with guidelines to implement it, application format, incentive allocation, etc. It should be published on the DoT website within a week, the official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI. ....

Samsung Q1 profit likely surged 45% on bumper smartphone, appliance sales

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd likely saw a 45% jump in profit for January-March on robust sales of smartphones, TVs and home appliances, though chip division earnings are seen tumbling after a storm suspended production at its U.S. plant.
Spending more time at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, consumers have splashed out on an array of high-margin consumer electronics which in turn has helped cause a global shortage of semiconductors.
Operating profit for the South Korean tech giant in the quarter is expected to have climbed to 9.3 trillion won ($8.2 billion), according to a Refinitiv SmartEstimate drawn from 16 analysts. SmartEstimates assign more weight to forecasts from consistently accurate analysts. ....

How LG Electronics lost race in fast-growing Indian smartphone market

LG Electronics that was once the world s third-largest handset maker and saw its feature phone business peaked some 10 years back, was never a serious contender in the fastest-growing India market, industry watchers reiterated on Monday.
LG that has shut down its mobile business, has been striving to make a turnaround in its mobile business in recent years, including launching the niche foldable smartphone called Wing a dual-screen device with a rotating form factor but its sales were apparently disappointing.
According to Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research, LG had 0.15 per cent market share in 2019 and 0.30 per cent in 2020. ....

Samsung to launch 2 Galaxy F Series smartphones in India next week

Samsung is all set to launch two F-series smartphones in India next week. Galaxy F12 is likely to be priced between Rs 10,000-Rs 15,000 while Galaxy F02s will be priced below Rs 10,000.
According to industry sources, Galaxy F12 is tipped to come with True 48MP camera, 90Hz refresh rate and a 6000mAh battery. It will be powered by 8nm Exynos processor, making the Galaxy F12 extremely power efficient, the sources told IANS on Thursday.
Galaxy F02s is likely to sport a 6.5-inch HD+ display and a 5000mAh battery with 15W fast charging.
Both Galaxy F12 and Galaxy F02s will feature premium haze and matt finish. ....

India tablet market grows 6% in 2020, Lenovo leads: CyberMedia

Driven by demand due to work-from-home and online education amid the pandemic, the India tablet market grew six per cent year-on-year (YoY) in 2020 with Lenovo leading the market with a 39 per cent share, said a new report from CyberMedia Research (CMR) on Thursday.
Lenovo, which replaced Samsung at the top, saw its commercial business registering robust growth, driven by government and education sectors, showed CMR s Tablet PC Market Report Review for 2020.
It maintained good score on tablet market demand in the last 14 consecutive quarters. Lenovo Tab M10 (HD) series garnered 10 per cent market share.
Samsung was placed second in the market leaderboard with 30 per cent market share. Samsung launched several tablets in 2020, including the Tab A7 LTE and WiFi version, Tab S7, S7 Plus and S6 lite. ....
