An agreement has been finalized between Howell Township and developers for an apartment project that will include federally subsidized units.
At a special meeting Thursday, the township signed a $1.1 million purchase agreement with Union Development Holdings for an approximately 27-acre parcel located off of Oak Grove Road, behind Kroger. Called Union at Oak Grove, the proposed complex would include 220 units, 60% of which would be marked as âaffordable housingâ in accordance with Michigan State Housing Development Authority guidelines. Based on a renterâs income, those units could be priced as low as $661 per month.
Howell Township sells land for $1.1M, affordable apartments planned
A proposed 220-unit apartment complex that will increase affordable housing in Howell is moving forward.
Howell Township is selling about 27 acres northwest of the intersection of Highland Road/M-59 and Oak Grove Road to real estate investment firm Union Development Holdings for $1.1 million.
About 60% of the apartments would be affordable units as defined by the Michigan State Housing and Development Authority. They would be backed by federal subsidies that give renters a break on rent based on their income.
The affordable apartments are estimated to be priced as low as $661 a month, based on a renter s income.

Some changes have been approved to an agreement between Howell Township and developers that were needed for an apartment project to move ahead.
Annex Group, which is now called Union at Oak Grove, is proposing a 220-unit apartment complex that would be located off of Oak Grove Road, behind Kroger. 60% of units would be marked as âaffordable housing,â but not Section 8 housing, in accordance with Michigan State Housing Development Authority guidelines.
Annex Group has been working through different issues with MSHDA, one of which was the purchase agreement with the township. It was stated that MSHDA wonât pay for the project until several items are put in place.
