Despite low turnout, two school issues fared well Tuesday

LANCASTER - Although voter turnout in the county was low, many issues seeking renewal passed in the Fairfield County primary election.
School districts fared well in the primary election Tuesday, with two of the three on the Fairfield County ballot passing.
The Berne Union Local School District s 2% income tax levy renewal passed by a clear margin, with 383 (67.43%) votes for and 185 (32.57%) votes against.
Jon Parker, the district superintendent, said it was a great night for the district.
The levy wasn t set to expire until 2024, but it s great that the voters decided to renew it, so now we don t have to worry about it, he said. ....

Union Local receives bomb threat | News, Sports, Jobs

MORRISTOWN – About 1,200 Union Local School District evacuated their classrooms Thursday after a bomb threat was received.
Parents in the district reported receiving an “All Call” message Thursday informing them of the threat. At least some students at the middle school were evacuated from their classrooms and taken to the bus garage around noon.
Superintendent Ben Porter said around 600 high school students and about the same number of middle school students were removed from their classrooms due to the threat. After Belmont County sheriff’s deputies swept the facility and found nothing, classes resumed and students finished out the day. ....

Union Local gets computer donation, sets graduation date | News, Sports, Jobs

BELMONT The Union Local School District is getting some welcome help from the community.
During last Thursday’s board meeting Superintendent Ben Porter recognized a donation from Thomas Auto Center in St. Clairsville of 20 computers to the school district.
“Thomas Auto Center’s a good partner for the district and they are frequent supporters of the school,” he said.
Curriculum Director Jayme Yonak, daughter of co-owner Robert Thomas, said the computers will be useful,
“He actually paid to have them cleaned,” she said. “He had the computers cleaned of all their data and stuff and brought them to Union Local School District. He delivered them to Union Local School District ready to go. We just had to put our programs on them. ....

BELMONT The Union Local School District launched new opportunities this week for students who have fallen behind during the COVID-19 pandemic or who want to supplement their learning with more activities.
A visit to the learning center at Union Local High School found students working on homework and projects and preparing for tests under the direction of Elyse Swallie, a ninth grade world studies teacher, and Kayla Mathias, high school math teacher. Swallie noted the middle school/high school group includes students in grades six through 12. ....

ST. CLAIRSVILLE Ohio school employees are set to begin receiving COVID-19 vaccines next week, but no local school districts are among the first group to get the shots.
Gov. Mike DeWine intends to make the shots available to school staff through February with the goal of resuming full-time in-person schooling in March.
Belmont County Deputy Health Director Robert Sproul addressed this during his Wednesday report to the Belmont County Board of Commissioners. Sproul said the state released names of the first school districts to receive vaccinations next week. However, no school districts in Belmont, Harrison, Jefferson or Monroe counties are on the list. ....
