Richmond Chamber set for first in-person mixer since start of pandemic

The Richmond Chamber of Commerce is inviting the community to join its first in-person mixer since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic at The Factory Bar on Thursday, July 22.
“After over a year of countless virtual meetings, webinars – it is time to come together in person,” said Richmond Chamber of Commerce President and CEO James Lee.
The event celebrating the resiliency of local entrepreneurs and businesses will take place from 4-5:30 p.m. at The Factory Bar, 12517 San Pablo Ave. The cost for entrance to the beer and tacos event is $10 for members, $15 for non-members.

Former Timaru hotel fenced off ahead of demolition of nearby buildings


The Stafford St buildings between the Excelsior and the Theatre Royal will be demolished as part of the project.
Timaru District Council spokesperson Stephen Doran said the temporary scaffolding is “to add additional support to the verandah at the corner of the Excelsior building while the demolition is taking place’’.

The 150-year-old building will survive the demolition of neighbouring buildings and be integrated into the heritage redevelopment.
Christened the Criterion at the end of the 19th Century, though better known as the Excelsior or X, it was one of the first bluestone buildings to be registered in Timaru. ....

Beer Can Monolith creator unveils new pyramids in Richmond, Albany

The beer can monolith creator (BCM) an anonymous Richmond artist who has built a number of pyramids throughout the city often using regionally crafted beer cans has added to his growing collection of works. His latest creations have recently been unveiled at The Factory Bar in Richmond, as well as the Ale Tales craft beer store in Albany.
The Factory piece, which the BCM creator calls the “Beer Tower,” was welcomed by the bar to its outdoor patio on Fourth of July weekend. The piece consists of 326 “odd sized” beer cans and took him a few hours to build. Those who want to see it in-person should swing by The Factory, 12517 San Pablo Ave. in Richmond, soon since the artist said it’s a temporary installment without a set takedown date. ....

Senior firefighter Laurie Clark at the Fire and Emergency New Zealand training exercise at the former Excelsior Tavern in Timaru’s Stafford St on Monday.
Smoke filled the upper floor of the building which housed Timaru’s first public watering hole on Monday, but there was no need for evacuation.
Eight firefighters with two fire engines from Timaru and Washdyke stations took part in a training exercise at the former Excelsior Tavern building, which was christened the Criterion, where until recently the Factory Bar and Nightclub was located.
