San Diego unemployment drops to nearly lowest level of the pandemic

San Diego County’s jobless rate dropped in March to 6.9 percent, nearly its lowest since the pandemic began, state labor officials reported Friday.
Employment gains were led by the leisure and hospitality sector, which benefited from curtailed state-mandated restrictions aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19.
The last time San Diego County’s jobless rate was lower was in November, when it dipped to 6.8 percent, according to data from the state Employment Development Department. That was right before the state imposed tighter restrictions to battle a surge in the virus over the holidays. The jobless rate hit 15.9 percent, its highest point, during the pandemic last April, based on revised figures ....

San Diego unemployment rises to 8% after state put in new COVID-19 restrictions [The San Diego Union-Tribune]
San Diego County’s jobless rate rose to 8 percent in December as many businesses were closed again to stop the spread of COVID-19.
The jobless rate hit 6.6 percent in November the lowest level since the pandemic began right before the county was placed in the state’s most restrictive virus closure protocol, called the purple tier.
That action moved restaurants, bars, gyms and movie theaters to outdoor-only and retail capacity was reduced. State health officials said the restrictions were necessary as Southern California became one of the nation’s hotspots for the virus. ....
