Local businesses donate $80,000 to workforce housing fund

Several Cape organizations have stepped up with donations to the Housing Assistance Corporation s Workforce Relief Fund, just as the state s eviction moratorium is expected to be lifted at the end of the month.
The corporation recently received $80,000 in donations to the fund, which offers money to help keep residents struggling to pay their rent or mortgaged housed during the pandemic.
Created when COVID-19 first started to affect the region, the fund offers one-time emergency assistance payments to year-round residents who are experiencing a gap between their incomes and eligibility requirements for governmental programs.
The Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation donated $50,000, the Cape and Islands Association of Realtors donated $20,000 and Shepley Wood Products donated nearly $10,000 to the fund. Barnstable Brewing also kicked in money from sales of its Civic Rent lager. ....

HYANNIS – A gift of $50,000 from Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, $20,000 from the Cape and Islands Association of REALTORS, and nearly $10,000 from Shepley Wood Products and Barnstable Brewing from their Civic Rent lager have given a boost to the financial resources provided by Housing Assistance Corporation to help vulnerable renters, facing the possibility of eviction, stay in their homes.
The winter season on Cape Cod is always a hard time for our local workforce to stay afloat, and the pandemic has only exacerbated this problem of our seasonal economy. Workers who would have picked up extra jobs and shifts over the summer to save for the winter months did not have the opportunity to do so this year. ....

Cape Cod homelessness will increase due to economic impacts of pandemic

HYANNIS – The Housing Assistance Corporation is concerned that this winter will see a surge in the numbers of homeless people on Cape Cod due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on housing and the economy.
In a press release Friday, HAC CEO Alisa Magnotta said a fragile seasonal economy increased the numbers of people struggling financially. At the same time, a red-hot real estate market drove up home prices and rents as second homeowners and off-Cape residents who were able to work from home bought or rented properties here.
Ryan Castle, CEO of the Cape Cod and Islands Association of Realtors, noted what he called a “massive decline” in the number of homes for sale and that affects affordability. ....
