The Mekong River Commission has expressed concerns over the “worrying” levels of the critical Mekong River and has asked China for more information about its hydropower dams.
The inter-government body released a statement on Friday and said water levels between Jinghong hydropower station in China’s Yunnan province and the Mekong Delta in Vietnam “have fallen to worrying levels.” ....

Water levels in the Mekong River have fallen to “worrying” levels since the start of this year, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) said last week, as the region heads into a third straight year of below average rainfall.
In a statement on February 12, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) said that drought conditions, flow changes upstream, hydropower operations in the Mekong tributaries, and outflow restrictions from the Jinghong Dam in China were responsible for the fall.
“There have been sudden rises and falls in water levels immediately downstream of Jinghong and further down to Vientiane, which has been challenging for authorities and communities to prepare for and respond to possible impacts,” Dr Winai Wangpimool, director of the MRC Secretariat’s Technical Support Division, said in the statement. ....

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) has expressed concern that water levels in the river have dropped significantly, changing the colour of the water in some areas, and warned that this situation could impact agricultural production and wildlife migration in Cambodia and the other countries in the region.
In a report released on February 12, the MRC detailed worrisome water levels in the Mekong between the Jinghong hydropower station in China’s Yunnan province and the delta in Vietnam.
“Water levels have dropped considerably since the beginning of the year due to lower rainfall, flow changes upstream, hydropower operations in the Mekong tributaries, and outflow restrictions from the Jinghong dam,” it said. ....

Water levels in the Mekong River are down to “worrying” levels with some parts of the major Southeast Asian waterway in Laos and Thailand turning blue because of increased algae growth, the Mekong River Commission said in a report Friday.
The report by the MRC – made up of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam – said the lower levels were caused by a lack of rainfall since the beginning of the year, upstream flow changes, hydropower dams in the river’s tributaries and China’s Jinghong Dam holding water back.
