Parents fill pandemic gap with vocational education

In some villages five out of 10 pupils have enrolled for vocational training. Because most schools including vocational colleges remain closed, local workshops and garages are taking in few learners for informal training.

As schools remain closed to the rest of the classes, some parents have resorted to enrolling their children in technical apprenticeships as a measure to keep them engaged and away from home.
At a furniture workshop in Mpererwe a Kampala suburb, I find about 10 young boys in the ages of 12 - 15 involved in carpentry work. Some are sanding furniture, others painting and some are observing the workmen go about their various tasks. ....

UBTEB set to conduct 2020 exams today


 
Addressing journalists at their offices in Ntinda this morning, the UBTEB Executive Secretary, Onesmus Oyesigye said students pursuing certificates in various programs were supposed to sit for their exams last year between November and December but due to covid-19, the exercise was postponed.
 
He said a total of 30,069 students will sit for their examinations from 460 centers across the country.
 
Oyesigye adds that the board has deployed 2,000 supervisors, 15,000 practical examiners and 443 scouts asking heads of institutions to observe the Standard Operation Procedures put in place by the ministry of health while conducting the exams.

To strengthen her re-election bid last September ahead of the NRM parliamentary primaries, outspoken minister of state for Investment and Privatisation, Evelyn Anite donated an ambulance to her constituents in the West Nile town of Koboko Municipality–creating one of the most critical services in this sub-region where too few ambulances are normally available for millions of people.
The second act of the MP was to use the donation to whip up the colour-coded politics in the sub-region. The ambulance was painted yellow to emphasize Anite’s loyalty to the ruling NRM party and bore an imprint; “MP Nakonesi” (Kakwa, for an action-oriented MP). ....

Following the disruption due to the Covid 19 outbreak, Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) conducted its national standardised examinations for candidates in diploma awarding institutions in November to December 2020.
Apart from the continuous assessments done by institutions, the assessment body also has the responsibility of conducting and assessing the written exam as well as the onspot practical examination which can run up to 12 hours depending on the course.  ....
