Portuguese scientists create bactericidal varnish - World News

LISBON, May 17 (Xinhua) Scientists at the University of Coimbra (UC) in the north of Portugal said on Monday that they had developed a varnish that kills even the most resistant bacteria in just 15 minutes.
The objective of their research is to find a safe and effective solution to prevent and combat hospital infections, the UC said in a statement.
This new intelligent varnish has high antimicrobial efficacy, which is activated by white light that is harmless to humans, the scientists said.
The findings of their research were published in the scientific journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces and financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education and Science of Portugal. ....

China’s State Intellectual Property Office issued a notice recently to radically change the country’s patent policy. It seeks to transform China from focusing on the number of patents to focusing on the quality of patents, in an effort to boost true indigenous innovation.
The policies include measures to cancel all patent subsidies, crack down on improper behavior to artificially increase patent filing numbers, and to tie patent numbers to other benefits.
At the same time, State Intellectual Property Office together with the the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology jointly issued a notice to ask universities to stop granting awards for patent applications, drastically reduce and gradually cancel awards for patent authorization. ....
