Nigeria ranks first in African startups but faces challenges — Quartz Africa

While it can boast of the largest number of startups in the Africa tech ecosystem, Nigeria lags in other important metrics, a new report ranking the continent’s major tech sectors asserts.
The report, compiled by fDi Intelligence, a specialist division of the Financial Times, in collaboration with research company Briter Bridges, aims to “map the continent’s nascent tech ecosystems and explore their potential moving forward.”
Investment in the continent’s start-up space is tiny in comparison to the global north. For example, US startups raised $156.2 billion in venture capital last year, per Pitchbook. By comparison, African startups have raised just more than $2 billion in the past two years, according to data from Briter Bridges (the amount of funding varies slightly depending on the metrics used) . ....

Zhang Yiming, founder of ByteDance, to step down as CEO — Quartz

Zhang Yiming, the co-founder of ByteDance, will step down at the end of the year as the CEO of the Chinese social media giant behind TikTok’s meteoric rise. Liang Rubo, another co-founder of ByteDance who is currently the head of human resources, will take Zhang’s role.
In an internal letter to employees, Zhang said he came to the conclusion that by quitting the CEO role, with all of its day-to-day responsibilities, he can “have greater impact on longer-term initiatives.” Zhang said he will take a new role at the company to focus on long-term strategy, corporate culture, and social responsibility but stopped short of revealing what title he would assume. Zhang and Liang will work alongside each other for the next six months to make sure the transition goes smoothly, according to the letter. ....
