UGA alum creates scholarship in honor of mentor/friend


FORT VALLEY — As a peach and pecan producer in central Georgia, Al Pearson relied on the expert advice provided by University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. In addition to the valuable counsel provided by extension peach expert Maurice E. “Butch” Ferree, Pearson gained something unexpected: a lifelong friend.
A member of the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Alumni Board, Pearson has established the Dr. Maurice E. “Butch” Ferree Scholarship to support students majoring in horticulture in honor of Ferree, who retired in 1998 after 24 years with UGA Extension.
The scholarship, which will be awarded for the first time in fall 2021, will provide scholarship awards for Georgia residents who are rising juniors or seniors majoring in horticulture at CAES. Recipients will be selected by a committee appointed by the college’s dean, and preference will be given to students who currently are or have previously been engaged in rura ....

Research opportunities for both scientists and students at the University of Southern Queensland have been given a boost with a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and Granite Belt Water Limited (GBW).
Engineering, agriculture, horticulture, hydrology and environment are just some of the research project focus areas that stand to benefit from the new partnership.
GBW is a community-owned entity with oversight of the Granite Belt Irrigation Project that will deliver a 12,074 megalitre dam at Emu Swamp as well as 126km of pipeline throughout the Granite Belt. ....

Agriculture Victoria is encouraging farmers across the state to add the Jobs Victoria online hub to their recruitment toolkit, and find local workers as this season’s harvest continues.
With the Victorian Government’s new Seasonal Harvest Sign-on Bonus generating interest in seasonal work among job seekers, now is a great time to get jobs posted.
The sign-on bonus offers workers $2,430 for eight weeks’ work, if they’ve taken up a harvest job since 17 February 2021.
Businesses across a range of sectors have used Jobs Victoria (formerly known as Working for Victoria) to fill their seasonal workforce needs, from berry farms and dairy operations and to large-scale enterprises. ....

he swung open his farm gate to showcase the scientific
research he’s worked on over the past two growing seasons.
The inspiration for Ants to do this work came from Parmjit
Randhawa, a leading researcher and advocate for the
Medicinal Cannabis and the Hemp industry in Australia and
New Zealand. Attendees were able to see six MOH approved
Hemp cultivars grown back to back in a scientific
trial.

India's horticulture production set for 1.8% growth in in 2020-21


Prices of vegetables and fruits are set to ease further, with the first Advance Estimates pegging horticulture production at 326.58 million tonnes (mt) for FY21 a growth of 1.8 per cent over last year.
Retail food inflation fell to 1.89 per cent in January from 3.41 per cent in December. Within that period, the price decline in vegetables came in higher at 15.84 per cent compared to 10.41 per cent, while the inflation rate in fruits rose to 4.96 per cent from the earlier 2.68 per cent.
Area under horticulture was also projected to rise 2.7 per cent during FY21, against the previous year.
Total horticulture production in FY21 is estimated at 326.58 mt, an increase of 5.81 mt over FY20. ....
