34 Years Later, Do You Remember the Flood of 1987?

34 Years Later, Do You Remember the Flood of 1987?
April 1, 1987, Central Maine was hit with massive flooding. The worst the area had seen in decades and thankfully, we haven t seen such an event since.
The flooding was so bad, it got the attention of Los Angeles Times. The flooding was caused by melting snow, rain, and high winds according to the 1987 article. 250 Mainers had to be evacuated.
The article noted extensive damage between the loss of Livermore Falls International Paper Co. s hydroelectric dam and a bridge over the Piscataquis River in Guilford.
According to WMTW, 14 of Maine s 16 counties were declared disaster areas with the Kennebec and Androscoggin areas being the worst. ....

Is Corn After Corn Right for You?

Now is the time to consider corn-after-corn rotations.
The strong demand for corn and the recent increase in prices are making many producers consider increasing the amount of corn they grow by expanding their acreage of corn after corn.
Before considering a major switch in rotations, consider the effects on your rotation, crop storage requirements, timeliness of planting conservation plans and ultimately, profitability.
On good soils, the ratio of corn to soybean yields is often 3 to 1. That’s 3 bushels of corn per bushel of soy.
However, on droughty soils, and in some areas of our state, this ratio drops to 2.5-to-1 or less, which makes continuous corn less attractive. ....

Master Gardener of Napa County: The Lemmons' Mexican marigold

When Hernando Cortes brought his army to Mexico in 1552, he was looking for more than Montezuma’s gold. The most durable treasure carried back to Europe by the conquistadores was plants. The invaders ransacked Montezuma’s famous gardens, in search of new varieties of vegetation that could feed their people back home. Crop failures and food shortages were a regular feature of European life at that time, and anyone who could allay those inconveniences would be rewarded.
The Mexican marigold (Tagetes lemmonii) was one of those plants. Along with potatoes, peppers and corn, it went to Europe, where gardeners adapted it into the local horticulture, most famously in France, where “French” marigold blossoms appeared in salads and soups. ....

Community garden's founder retires, hands over reins | Local News

If Payson Community Garden founder Roger Kreimeyer were a plant, he would be a sunflower — strong roots and stalk, sunny outlook and lots of seeds.
But he’s leaving Rim Country to live closer to family leaving the community a bit less colorful.
“This will be a blow to northern Gila County,” said Kenny Evans, the new director of the garden.
Kreimeyer lived for decades in the area volunteering his time, organizational and persuasive skills to the Boy Scouts, public landscape projects, his church and services for those who struggled with basic needs.
But he had a special place in his heart for those who grappled with food insecurity. As part of his legacy, he leaves projects such as the Payson Area Food Drive and the Payson Community Garden. ....
