Why 'Drishyam' director Jeethu Joseph created a sequel to the hit Mohanlal film

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s 2013 thriller ‘Drishyam’, a riveting tale about a crafty father who covers up an accidental murder committed by his teenage daughter, had a watertight ending.
All the possible loose ends in which a middle-class parent Georgekutty played brilliantly by Mohanlal outsmarts a brutal police force by having strong alibis were tied up, eliminating the need for a sequel.
Even director Jeethu Joseph firmly believed that ‘Drishyam’, which has been remade in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, should be left untouched.

The director said he had a change of heart when he saw ‘Drishyam’ fans come up with their versions for a second instalment. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has entertained his fans for more than three decades now. After delivering back-to-back blockbusters on the big screen, he will now feature in ‘Drishyam 2’, which drops on Amazon Prime on February 19.
As the attention of theatre-goers shifts focus to streaming platforms in the wake of the pandemic, Mohanlal calls these “exciting times” for everyone in the film industry.
“The advantage of ‘Drishyam 2’ releasing on an OTT [over-the-top] platform is that this movie will have an exclusive premiere globally. Making it available to avid cinephiles across 240 countries will help us reach a wider segment of audience across regions and languages.
