Pamplin Media Group - Panel: 'Urban core' needs community support

The Portlnd Business Alliance hears about problems and solutions for downtown at its monthly forum.
Downtown Portland and its surrounding neighborhoods are facing serious problems, but they are not as bad as the national news media makes them sound and they not insurmountable — although it will take full community response to overcome them.
That was the consensus of a diverse panel of business owners and managers who spoke at a remote Portland Business Alliance forum on Wednesday, April 21. Titled "Re-Activating Portland's Urban Core," it focused on how to overcome the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic that closed offices and increased homelessness, and the months-long series of protests that frequently ended with violence.

The global coronavirus pandemic jolted the world, and also exposed the underbelly of a city on the verge of a social and economic crisis.
It wasn't long ago that the Rose City's star was rising, but now we're in the middle of the fight for the soul of Portland.
A year ago, in March 2020, the pandemic forced us all to stay home and shelter in place. Streets emptied and stores closed. It affected not just our city, but every city. However, it was the months following the COVID shutdown that left Portland's reputation bruised.

Numerous businesses remain shuttered in downtown Portland more than a year into the coronavirus pandemic.
Dozens of buildings and storefronts still have boards on their windows as well, a product of the property damage that occurred during nightly protests last summer and periodically since then.
Several major downtown hotels remain closed and those that are open are lucky to average above 40% capacity in a given week. Some workers have returned to downtown, but most continue to telecommute and may not work in offices again for months.

Pamplin Media Group - Opinion: It's time to plan Portland's Pandemic Independence party

April 02 2021
Eric Fruits, Ph.D. is vice president of Research at Cascade Policy Institute and an adjunct professor at Portland State University, where he teaches courses in urban economics and regulation.
We're in the waning days of the pandemic, and it's time to take action to return to normal. About one-quarter of the state's population has been vaccinated or received a first dose.
If the state keeps the current rate of vaccination, we should achieve herd immunity by early July. This also coincides with Independence Day, as well as some of Oregon's best weather. Let's make the Fourth of July the day Oregon celebrates our independence from the pandemic — a summer of street fairs, block parties, dining out, and get-togethers. That gives us a little more than three months to get ready. And like any big celebration, there's a lot to do.

For more than a decade crows have been roosting in Portland. During the fall and winter months, American crows will congregate in numbers from a couple dozen to tens of thousands, and make their way to urban and rural landscapes around Portland where they chat it up and camp out for the night. But by far the largest congregation takes place in downtown. At its peak, the crow roost in downtown Portland can exceed 15,000.

As COVID-19 wears on, the simple act of picking up trash is more impactful than you might think.

A SOLVE worker at a downtown Portland cleanup on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. More than 300 folks volunteered that day to pick up 4,310 pounds of litter and approximately 48,800 cigarette butts from around Portland.
Picking up trash isn’t all that hard to do. The problem is, it’s even easier
not to do it—to rely on the janitorial instinct of someone who cares. Or perhaps you think your tax dollars will pay for someone,
