A community partnership meant to make Winnipeg s downtown safer reports emergency calls diverted and more social supports given to vulnerable people over the past year.
A community partnership meant to make Winnipeg s downtown safer reports emergency calls diverted and more social supports given to vulnerable people over the past year.
Established in April 2020, the Downtown Community Safety Partnership s three teams have conducted more than 2,000 well-being checks, assisted more than 100 medical assistance events, referred more than 450 people for housing, and helped more than 60 individuals get identification documentation.

The provincial Families Department has also seconded a staff member to the partnership. That staffer will help people who need support or resources for housing, employment and other services the department provides, Families Minister Rochelle Squires said. ....

The convenience store cashier sees everything on his corner of Graham Avenue. His view is good: behind the register, he sits on a fading vinyl stool that pivots, and if he turns his head over his left shoulder, his eyes look right out toward the bus stop. If he’s lucky, the benches are full of university students or harried office workers, and the No. 18 is running a bit late.
