Marching bands from Africa, Asia, South America and Europe will be coming to town for 2023 competition
BUCKHANNON – More than 5,000 participants are expected to take part in the 2023 World Association of Marching Show Bands Championship in Buckhannon, West Virginia.
During the May 4 Rotary Club of Buckhannon-Upshur meeting, Buckhannon City Recorder Randy Sanders talked about the preparations being made in anticipation of the event.
“We have bands from Honduras, Congo, Brazil, Bahamas, Angola, Guatemala, Thailand, Poland, Colombia, El Salvador, Netherlands, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Ireland, Canada, Venezuela, Germany, Uruguay and Ecuador,” Sanders said. “I think there are four or five from Colombia alone, and the list goes on. We’re up to 29 bands right now, and we’re working across the country to secure some United States bands as well.” ....

Judge denies Catholic Church's motion to dismiss in case of men switched at birth

MORGANTOWN – A circuit judge has denied the Catholic Church’s motion to dismiss a case in which two 78-year-old men who say they were switched at birth by staff at a Catholic hospital.
John William Carr III and Jackie Lee Spencer originally filed their lawsuit June 5 against the Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston in Monongalia Circuit Court. Joining them as plaintiffs are wives Bonnie Lynn Carr and Phyllis Ann Spencer as well as adopted son Zackery Stealth Carr.
On March 1, Monongalia Circuit Judge Phillip Gaujot issued his order denying the Motion to Dismiss filed last July. The Diocese alleged, among other things, the statute of limitations had expired in the case. ....

Buckhannon looks at first due fire fee | News, Sports, Jobs

BUCKHANNON The Buckhannon City Council is continuing discussion on implanting a first due fire fee that would impose a fee on all residents served by the Buckhannon Fire Department in their first due area. This would include structures outside of the corporate city limits.
At a city budget hearing recently, council members held a candid discussion about a first due fire fee.
The fee, if done at $4.50 a month, could generate $200,000 a year that would fund three new career firefighters a need by the Buckhannon Fire Department to better serve citizens and meet accreditation standards.
Council also discussed taking the $200,000 from the sales tax revenue generated each year, but some council members expressed concern that sales tax revenue was not always guaranteed. Also discussed Wednesday was a look at increasing the fire and police fees. No decisions were made at the meeting. ....
