Malcolm X's Childhood Home Added To National Register of Historic Places

William Galvin and the Massachusetts Historical Commission have added the childhood home of
Malcolm X to the National Registry of Historic Places. According to Galvin, it is the only residence that remains from the civil rights icon s time in the Boston area. While in Boston, he went by the name
Malcolm Little. He lived with his half-sister
Ella Little-Collins and spent time exploring the city. Unfortunately, he was arrested in the city of Boston and charged with larceny. Fortunately, his time in prison led him to the Nation of Islam and his historic civil-rights career.
Malcolm X s nephew,
Rondell, said that the family hopes to open up the house to the public. He believes the home can be split into a museum and housing for graduate students studying Black history. As a result of the house s recent designation, the family will have access to tax incentives and funding that will help them achieve their goals. ....

Hidden 19th-Century Bottle Recovered in Boston - Archaeology Magazine

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS
WHDH Bostonreports that a note was found in a nineteenth-century whiskey bottle hidden in a wall of a home in the Back Bay area of the city. The City of Boston Archaeology Program thinks the bottle may have been placed in a space between an interior wall and the fireplace flue when the home was built. Dated September 23, 1894, the note reads “6 on Shea,” and the name “Tom Ford.” The bottle’s intact label reads “N. Simons, Importer and Wholesale Liquor Dealer,” with the address “31 & Castle St., Boston.” Some think the note may be a record of a bet on a sporting team. Four-thousand-six-hundred-and-fifty-three: That’s the number of medium Dunkin’ iced coffees it would take to fill a mysterious 16.5-foot hole discovered in Boston earlier this month.
A park-goer stumbled upon on the cavity at Ronan Park on Dec. 6. Their discovery followed a rain storm that caused dirt to slump down the significant sinkhole, authorities said.
City officials later revealed the cavity, which has come to be called the Dorchester sinkhole, is actually a 19th century well that was buried under 10 feet of fill used to make the park in the early 1910s. ....

A Boston resident made an interesting discovery in their fireplace recently.
Hidden away in a space between the fireplace flue and an interior wall was an old rye whiskey bottle, and inside the bottle was a folded up piece of paper. It turned out to be a handwritten note, with the name “Tom Ford” scrawled on it, along with the mysterious phrase “6 on Shea,” and the date, Sept. 23, 1894.
In an effort to gain some insight into the meaning behind the cryptic message, officials from the City of Boston Archaeology Program posted photos of the corked bottle — and the handwritten note that it contained — on social media. The label on the bottle said “N. Simons, Importer and Wholesale Liquor Dealer, 31 & 33 Castle St., Boston.” The home where it was found ....
