Lenox convenience store plan makes good first impression

LENOX — After hearing a warm welcome from community members for a prospective modern convenience store and gas station in the heart of downtown, the Zoning Board of Appeals put off for three weeks a decision on a special permit, pending more details on lighting plans for the Main Street property.
During a presentation Wednesday on the project, a representative of Chucky’s LLC, the prospective buyer and operator of the site, noted that the Oxford-based company owns six convenience stores, including a renovated facility in Pittsfield.
The current pump islands would be reduced from three to two, with four self-service filling locations instead of the current six. It would be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. The automotive repair and towing business would be relocated. ....

Lenox Cultural District looks past snow, pandemic to arts, music events

LENOX — Despite mounds of snow decorating the downtown historic village, and with an uncertain outlook for the summer arts and entertainment season because of COVID-19, the Lenox Cultural District is planning a series of outdoor activities for spring and beyond.
The district’s mission is to promote cultural resources not only within its defined boundaries in the village center, but also for the small businesses and large venues “that help make Lenox unique and vibrant throughout the year,” Land Use Director and Town Planner Gwen Miller said at the organization’s recent virtual meeting.
As a hub, the district, established in 2019 by the Mass Cultural Council, works as a spoke leading to smaller and outlying attractions, she added, with pathways and signs, as well as creation of new offseason and summertime programming and events. ....

High-end condos, commercial space in downtown Lenox? For a second time, yes

LENOX — The Zoning Board of Appeals has flashed a second green light for a mixed-use, downtown development project.
The board, which was under a Berkshire Superior Court order to review its previous decision, voted unanimously Wednesday night to reaffirm its previous special permit granted last January for Nathan and Kathryn Winstanley’s Windrose complex at 114 Main St.
The project, estimated at between $15 million and $20 million, includes renovation of the 1790 Northrup House and the construction of three new buildings featuring 26 high-end condos on the 3.26-acre property. One of them would house several street-level businesses or offices.
Local architect Jim Harwood’s lawsuit against the board and the town appealing the ZBA’s original approval of the plan remains in the hands of Superior Court Judge Douglas Wilkins. ....
