School board OKs compensation package


GARRETT — The Garrett-Keyser-Butler school board Monday approved a compensation package for administrative and non-certified employees for the next year.
The measure includes 2% increases for administrative employees including the superintendent, high school and middle school principals and assistant principals, elementary principal and high school athletic director; a 1.5% increase for the elementary assistant principal; and a 6.76% hike for the Career Development Program director. Non-certified employees will see an estimated across-the-board 3% increase.
A recommendation to increase daily pay for substitute teachers was also approved, from $75 to $85 for non-certified, from $80 to $85 for certified and from $85 to $90 for retired teachers. The increase will begin with the 2021-2022 school year. ....

Donors make historic marker possible


To the editor:
I would like to thank the following donors who have made DeKalb County s next official state historic marker possible: Sandra Arvin, Mayor Todd Fiandt and wife Victoria, City Planner Milton Otero and wife Tracy, Kent and Shelley Johnson. This latest endeavor has been delayed for the past year due to the pandemic, but as of last week, the funds needed to send the bronze marker into production were sent to Indianapolis. This official interpretative panel will honor the life and work of stage and screen star John Bowersox, who went by the stage name John Bowers. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, His career on stage and film started while growing up in Garrett, and he would go on to become one of the most famed actors of his time. His depth of work transcended beyond Indiana and qualified him for consideration for an official state historic marker. The Indiana State Historical Bur ....

Garrett homeowners served eviction notice


GARRETT — DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department officers served an eviction notice for Terry Lee Freeman and all other occupants at 513 E. Quincy St. in Garrett March 29.
Doors to the home were boarded up, and police tape was strung around the front and back entrances of the home.
It was deemed unsafe for inhabitants by the Garrett Unsafe Building Authority in hearings that began in June 2019 and continued through a court hearing before Judge Kevin Wallace in DeKalb Superior Court I on Nov. 18, 2020.
Freeman and his sister, Lori Ann Freeman, who lives in Auburn, are co-owners of the property.
Following court action, the Freemans were given 60 days to vacate, and 45 days to remove or relocate property from the premises, in preparation for demolition within 120 days. ....

Recycling center shows increased revenue, materials


GARRETT — While deliveries at the City of Garrett recycling center were down by nearly one-third last year, the center showed increases in both revenue and recyclable materials, City Planner Milton Otero reported to the Board of Works Tuesday.
His report tallied a total of 2,529 vehicles that delivered recyclable materials to the drive-through site on North Cowen Street in 2020, a decrease of 30.6% from 2019. The center saw 1,092 total volunteer hours accumulated, a decrease of 19.1% from the previous year.
The report showed the recycling center collected a total of 25,798 pounds of recyclable materials ranging from cardboard, magazines, newspapers, glass, plastic and sheet iron. This was an increase of 79.4% over 2019. The total 2020 revenue for recyclable materials turned-in was $1,179, an increase of 42.8% over 2019. ....
