Treasurer of law enforcement union pleads guilty to tax evasion and lying to federal officers


Audrey Strauss, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that Steven Whittick, the former treasurer of the Law Enforcement Employees Benevolent Association ( LEEBA ) and an officer with the New York City (the City ) Department of Environmental Protection ( DEP ), pled guilty today before United States District Judge P. Kevin Castel, to charges of conspiring to evade more than $250,000 in federal taxes, including payroll taxes owed by LEEBA and its employees, and his own personal income taxes. Whittick also pled guilty to lying to federal officers during the course of the investigation in this case. LEEBA is a labor union that represents certain law enforcement officers employed by the City, including officers from DEP, the City Department of Sanitation, and the City Department of Transportation. ....

Recycle Small Electronics at Addabbo District Offices

State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) is partnering with the City Department of Sanitation to help recycle electronics.
From May 3 through May 31, Addabbo’s Howard Beach and Middle Village offices will be able to collect small electronics to be properly recycled through DSNY.
Addabbo’s Howard Beach office is located at 159-53 102nd St., and the Middle Village office is at 66-85 73rd Pl. Both offices are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can accept the small electronics during those times.
Addabbo requests that any electronics dropped off at his offices are small so they can fit into the DSNY-provided bin until there is enough collected for a pickup. ....

City Announces Return of Curbside Composting | The Forum Newsgroup

Thursday’s announcement means curbside composting and seasonal leaf collections are being restored nearly a year ahead of schedule.

The City will resume its Curbside Composting Program, which had been put on hold due to the budgetary impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Thursday.
This new iteration of the program will be available to the 3.5 million New Yorkers who previously had curbside collection service, with buildings and residents able to voluntarily opt-in to receive free weekly curbside composting service. Enrollment will launch in August, with collection services set to begin in October and expand as more buildings opt in. Significant expansions of community composting, reuse, and hazardous waste disposal programs are included in the announcement as well. ....
