A Philippine City’s ‘Green Program’ Requires Marriage License Applicants to Plant Trees
As part of an initiative to promote greener public spaces, a city in the Philippines now requires couples applying for a marriage license to plant five trees each. Participants are already celebrating the “green legacy” of the program.
The City of Borongan in the province of Eastern Samar, Philippines, took to Facebook in December 2020 to announce the new environmentally-friendly stepping stone for engaged couples.

ILOILO City Government continues to look for ways in improving its initiative on landscaping for food by planting vegetables initially.
The greening endeavor has been expanded into integrated farming basically not just communal gardening but it now infuses breeding of tilapias and native chickens.
Mayor Jerry Treñas Ediscape (Edible landscaping) program has been initiated in 12 pilot barangays through the City Population Office and Barangay Service Point Officers late last year.
We already have 32 barangays willing to join. We will try to look at other technologies that can fit in an urban setting so we can maximize agriculture s economic potentials, said Acting City Agriculturist Iñigo Garingalao. ....

TACLOBAN CITY – Couples applying for a marriage license are now required to plant five “Barok” (scientific name: Ceriops Tagal) trees in Borongan City.

Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda directed the City Population Office to require the coupes to plant the trees in designated areas identified by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office.
