International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD30)

By UNFPA30-Year Review of the Implementation of the Programme of Action of the ICPDSince the adoption of the ICPD Programme of Action, UNFPA has supported five-year reviews of its implementation. As ICPD’s 30-year anniversary approaches, UNFPA is facilitating the review process to take stock of progress and to reflect on the current status and the future of ICPD implementation.The ICPD30 ApproachThe 30-year review (ICPD30) process is conducted through multiple actors, events, dialogues and platforms, engaging a wide and diverse array of stakeholders, beyond the formal intergovernmental processes.ObjectivesICPD30 will celebrate 30 years of ICPD achievements and a growing understanding of the importance and significance of human-centred sustainable development, setting the stage for a recommitment to the ICPD agenda and positioning for the post-2030 population and development agenda.The review takes place around key multilateral processes and moments, including the global review of the SDGs at the 2023 High Level Political Forum (July 2023), the 2023 SDG Summit (September 2023), the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (December 2023) and the 2024 Summit of the Future (September 2024).The 57th Session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) in April of 2024 will be dedicated to assessing the status of 30 years of ICPD implementation. This will be informed by ICPD30 reviews at national and regional levels, reflected in the UN Secretary General’s Report.At regional and national levels, in consultation with Member States and in cooperation with UN partners, institutions and experts, UNFPA will support a systematic process to capture data that are comparable across countries and regions, highlighting common issues, gaps and trends. This evidence will be collected through national consultations and reports, as well as through outcome documents and reports from regional population conferences.Global dialogues focusing on youth, technological change and our demographic diversity are organized to spark conversations among multiple actors and experts, in order to better understand the pushback against elements of the ICPD agenda, and to build a global knowledge base to support delivering on the ICPD agenda. These dialogues will be crucial moments to reinvigorate and expand the ICPD community to have greater impact and build strong political will around the ICPD agenda beyond 2024.Associated ICPD30 events are spaces ICPD30 creates to bring together partners, allies and key stakeholders to celebrate, evaluate and position the future of the ICPD, building on existing events. These associated events have the potential to capture the viewpoints of global constituencies on the ICPD and to magnify the voices of different constituencies that will hold power holders to account.A global synthesis report will put together data collected through global dialogues, national consultations, associated events, statements from civil society organizations (CSOs) and regional conferences. The global ICPD30 report will provide an authoritative account of the state of implementation of the ICPD agenda, identifying and addressing emerging challenges and opportunities to accelerate ICPD implementation beyond 2024.This report will be widely distributed to Member States and multiple stakeholders and factored into the 79th General Assembly, the High Level Political Forum and the Summit of the Future in 2024. In addition, it is expected that data collected through the review will inform the Secretary General’s Report prior to the 57th Commission on Population and Development in 2024.More information
