Ron Swafford announced Wednesday that he is retiring after a long career that included Juvenile Court Clerk, City Human Services Department director, City Council member and, for the past eight years, City Court Clerk.
It will be up to new mayor Tim Kelly to appoint his successor at City Court.
Mr. Swafford started his career at the Hamilton County Juvenile Court in 1978. He served in many roles there and alongside three Juvenile Court Judges and many magistrates. His final 12 years he was the elected Juvenile Court Clerk. ....

SEATTLE A federal appeals court rejected a proposed safe consumption site in Philadelphia in a 2-1 ruling, saying it would violate a federal crack house statute on using buildings to make, sell or use a controlled substance.
Jesse Rawlins of the Yes to SCS Coalition said safe drug consumption sites can be one way to reduce overdose deaths in King County.
“I want to be very, very clear that supervised consumption services or safe consumption spaces, is not the panacea to addressing the overdose crisis,” said Rawlins. ....

The Seattle City Council this week approved a $5 million relief package to help small businesses and workers in the city impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Of the $5 million, half will go to help restaurants and bars and the other half will go toward hospitality workers.
“In response to skyrocketing cases in our region and state, Governor Inslee rightly implemented statewide restrictions to curb indoor gathering and slow the spread of COVID-19. But there’s no denying these restrictions have impacted our small businesses and workers, who have been reeling from the pandemic for almost a year now,” Mayor Jenny Durkan said in a statement. ....
