PETERSBURG, Va. (WWBT) - The City of Petersburg has announced a positive fund balance for the Fiscal Year 2019-2020.
A release said based on conservative budgeting, fiscal management and a streamlined collections process, the city’s revenue exceeded expenditures in the General Fund.
“During FY 2016-2017, the City positively closed the $7 million deficit to just $143,932. The FY 2018-2019 CAFR results showed an unassigned fund balance of $8,060,337, marking the second time since 2015 that the City had a positive fund balance,” a release said. ....

PETERSBURG – City officials are urging residents to remain cautious and avoid the roads Saturday with an incoming storm expected to blanket the area with a layer of slick ice.
Overnight snow and sleet gave way to rain on Friday, but this second round of ice has potential to be more dangerous.
The National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning for the region, beginning at midnight on Friday and running until 5 a.m. Sunday. The storm is expected to drop one-tenth to a quarter-inch of ice on Petersburg, with a half inch expected in areas west and south of the city. ....

Kenneth Miller returns to Petersburg as Interim City Manager

Miller is has already overseen the city s operations in short stints, saying he filled in for Ferrell-Benavides when she went out of town. Now, his short-term mission is to get the city ready for the next city manager to takeover.
Petersburg has very very good employees, Miller said. The biggest task is to make sure they have the tools to do their jobs and at the same time we identify the right person to be the next city manager for the City of Petersburg.
Mayor Samuel Parham says that City Council is not planning to hire a search firm to replace Ferrell-Benavides like it has previously for high-level positions. Instead, Petersburg will work with Virginia Municipal League, a statewide nonprofit association of local governments. ....

By accepting the job, Ferrell-Benavides is bookending Lone Star State positions around her time in Petersburg. She was city manager of Glenn Heights, south of Dallas, when Petersburg hired her.
Duncanville, with a population of about 7,000 more than Petersburg, is located about 10 miles north of Dallas.
In the announcement, Duncanville called Ferrell-Benavides committed to serving in the field of public administration as well as a person with a true commitment to government.
