Crystal River in 2020: A year of action, 'bridge-building'


Crystal River wasn’t lazy as it went through the obstacles and hardships of 2020.
Boxes on the city’s to-do list were being checked off as its leaders and staff fast-tracked town square, honed in on finishing the Riverwalk, put a tighter grip on King’s Bay, revamped land development codes and staked a claim of State Road 44.
“In spite of all the issues we’ve seen with COVID and all of the things it has brought, it has really been a year of action in the city,” Mayor Joe Meek said during a Zoom interview. “… and the proof is the pudding; I encourage folks to come to Crystal River.” ....

CR Council OKs Manatee Festival for January; COVID contingency dates in place


Crystal River City Council members gave the OK to have the annual Manatee Festival as planned in their downtown, but backup plans are in place if COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations surge.
With a quarantined Mayor Joe Meek phoning into council’s Monday, Dec. 14, 2020, meeting, hosted by Vice Mayor Robert Holmes, city officials voted 5-0 to approve the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce’s permit for the event on Jan. 16 and 17.
However, depending on virus transmission rates and hospital cases, the chamber has until Dec. 31 to either continue as scheduled or postpone until March 27 and 28.
