Fayetteville City Council unanimously approves the new budget

The Fayetteville City Council members voted unanimously Monday to approve the city s budget for the 2021-2022 fiscal year with some noted changes.
The final budget comes out as $240.3 million, a nearly $1 million increase from the proposed budget of $239.3 million that City Manager Doug Hewett presented to the council last month. The increase was in the budget s general fund.
Hewett presented the new changes at the City Council meeting Monday evening.
The total increase for the proposed general fund for the budget is $957,885, which includes additional funds for emergencies that may come up in the year, according to Hewett. The increase is funded by an increased fund balance appropriation.  ....

Fayetteville City Council exploring childcare options for employees

Fayetteville City Council decided at its work session Monday to look into childcare options for city employees.
The council voted 7-1  toresearch how best the city could provide assistance on childcare for its employees. Councilwoman Courtney Banks-McLaughlin brought up the issue.
Currently, the city doesn t provide childcare, nor has it done a study to assess the need among essential employees, spokeswoman Nacarla Webb said in an email Tuesday.
Councilwoman Yvonne Kinston told the council that the city needed to look into the daycare facilities as they open back up with limited capacity. She said the city should see if city employees are having issues getting their children into care, as well as look into their other needs. She also said city officials need to look into how many single parents work for the city as essential employees and determine their needs for services. ....

Fayetteville City Council votes to repurpose Market House

A new future is on its way for Fayetteville s long-contested Market House.
Fayetteville City Council voted 9-1 on Thursday to repurpose the building. The city plans to use Department of Justice guidance to make sure the project serves as many community members as possible.
Voting in opposition was Councilwoman Courtney Banks-McLaughlin, who wanted more citizen input and called for a federal investigation into not including that feedback.
Over the course of discussion that lasted nearly 90 minutes, the council was presented with options on relocating the Market, as well as five options for repurposing the building.
The building is a national landmark but has come under fire for its history as a site for selling enslaved people. Its future has been a topic of discussion since last summer s protests following Fayetteville native George Floyd s death in police custody. ....

Driving While Black: Fayetteville police drop a community policing star

Some in our community believe the Fayetteville Police Department is disproportionately targeting Black drivers for stops and vehicle searches. Police Chief Gina Hawkins pushes back on the allegation, saying the data on stops can be misleading and her officers are just doing their jobs.
This issue dubbed “Driving While Black” boils down to trust. Trust is the kind of currency that community policing is meant to shore up between officers and the public.
So I was surprised to learn the Police Department this past week got rid of one of its best community liaisons, Lisa Jayne, a 10-year-veteran. She is known around churches, nonprofits, rec centers and multiple organizations in Fayetteville as the program coordinator for Operation Ceasefire. She moves deftly between diverse communities, a critical skill in a city like ours. ....
