Southwest Harbor harbormaster steps down
SOUTHWEST HARBOR You’ll probably still see Jesse Gilley on the water in Southwest Harbor after this week, but it won’t be in his capacity as the harbormaster. 
“A job came up that worked a little better for my family and I couldn’t refuse it,” he said. 
Gilley, who was brought on by the town earlier this year, has taken a job as a boat captain with John W. Goodwin Jr. Construction, where he’ll run a transport barge to the islands off Mount Desert Island. 
“I really enjoyed this job,” Gilley said of his five months in Southwest Harbor. He was sad to leave much earlier than he ever planned, but the new gig was too good to pass up.   ....

SOUTHWEST HARBOR Worried about possible future constraints on private and public property, selectmen voted Tuesday to submit a letter to the Maine Historic Preservation Commission outlining several concerns regarding a nomination of the Mount Desert Island Hiking Trail System to the National Register of Historic Places. 
Notices regarding this nomination were previously sent a year ago, on April 17, 2020, to each town on Mount Desert Island regarding the nomination. That was a month after nearly all public events were shut down due to COVID-19. Selectmen and the Bar Harbor Town Council were trying to figure out how to continue meeting via Zoom, among other pressing town business, and may not have had time to review these notices.   ....

Selectmen set a price for town garage
SOUTHWEST HARBOR After voters decided against a proposed $1.85 million town garage at the 2020 Town Meeting, the Board of Selectmen has struggled with how to move forward.
During their Tuesday meeting, the first with interim Town Manager Dana Reed, members of the board suggested setting a price of $1.5 million and seeing what they could get for that amount. 
At the end of 2020, an Infrastructure Committee was formed in order to explore options for constructing a new town garage and to make recommendations to the Board of Selectmen. 
“I can see why you want to replace the garage,” Reed said to the board, noting its sagging roof and drainage problems. “I’m really looking for some direction since this seems to be a high priority for the town.” ....
