Lemoore council ratifies emergency, gets update on water tank explosion

The Lemoore City Council ratified an emergency declaration and got an update on an explosion which killed one and destroyed a water tank last week during a special session Monday.
The June 21 explosion dumped 1.5 million gallons of water, threw a water tank 70 feet in the air, and caused a wave which took out solar panels, communication with the pump station and killed contractor Dion Jones, a 41-year-old father of three.
The council passed the declaration 4-0, with Mayor Jared Lyons absent from the special session.
The tank that ruptured in Lemoore held 1.5 million gallons of water.

Maggie Valley may have the opportunity to levy a 2 percent occupancy tax within its town limits.
Maggie Valley may have the opportunity to create its own Tourism Development Authority for the purpose of promoting tourism in the town if House Bill 412 becomes law. Both the Mayor and the Board of Aldermen have expressed support for the idea.
The bill is sponsored by Western North Carolina Republican Representatives Mark Pless and Mike Clampitt. Filed in March, it originally included all of Haywood County as well as Bryson City, raising the occupancy tax from 4 to 6 cents in Haywood and creating a new tax for the town of Bryson. In the original bill, revenue from the tax could only be spent on a sports park, an amphitheater or a convention center. For Maggie Valley, these specific spending requirements didn’t make sense. ....

Dec. 21 HANFORD 2020. The year that absolutely no one will forget. Littered with multiple divisive issues, none bigger than COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement, the year had multiple memorable moments in Kings County.
After hours of combing through hundreds of stories I wrote, here are my top 10 of 2020.
1. Hundreds attend Black Lives Matter protest at Hanford Civic Auditorium
HANFORD With Hanford being a staunch and overtly conservative area, organizers for the Black Lives Matter protest in June were hoping for 50 people to show up. Instead, what transpired was a sea of support at the Hanford Civic Auditorium with more than 500 people standing in solidarity for one cause. ....
