SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - The City of Sarasota has extended its declaration of a local citywide public health emergency through Feb. 26 following a weekly review, as required by the City Charter, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The emergency order was issued Friday by City Manager Marlon Brown.
The city’s temporary street closure program allows additional space for outdoor dining to help restaurants and retailers severely impacted by the pandemic. The following temporary closures are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday: ....

Hope Gibson steps down as Corbin's recreation director

CORBIN — The city of Corbin will begin searching for a new recreation director, as the City Commission approved the resignation of Hope Gibson during Tuesday evening’s special-called meeting.
“She really has done a great job and she’s been instrumental, especially over the last year with everything that everyone’s been through,” commented Commissioner Seth Reeves. “I hate to lose her, but I wish her the best of luck,” he added before making a motion to accept Gibson’s resignation.
Mayor Suzie Razmus echoed Reeves’ remarks, saying Gibson had done a great job. ....

And that ultimately came down to one thing: longtime Police Chief Bernadette DiPino had to go.
It will be easy for some to solely attribute DiPino’s resignation – which will become official Friday evening and end an eight-year tenure that included many admirable accomplishments – to the escalating controversy sparked by the revelation that DiPino had joked about wanting to Taser a mentally ill homeless man who was heckling police personnel.
And true enough DiPino’s remark, which was reported to City Hall by an officer and led to an internal review and subsequent apology, had set the groundwork for police union members to consider taking a vote of “no confidence” in her – a step that would have represented an extraordinary and humiliating rebuke by the very people she was tasked to lead. ....

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Bernadette DiPino has resigned as chief of police for the Sarasota Police Department, effective 5 p.m. Friday.
The announcement came after a complaint was filed with the City of Sarasota over comments Chief Bernadette DiPino made about a homeless man.
The City released information on the anonymous complaint, saying that Chief DiPino made the comments at a public event where a known individual with documented mental illnesses began mocking the officers and singers at the event. ....
