Tuesday, May 11 Morning Weather
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A weakening low is drifting into the Prince William Sound today keeping the chance for rain and slightly cooler temperatures in the forecast. Many locations already saw rain overnight into this morning and have since dried out. While coastal regions will see the greatest precipitation today, as the storm moves to the northwest we’ll tap into more moisture.
Inland regions of Southcentral will see more dry time than wet weather, but the chance for scattered drizzle does stay with us through the day. Although, the better fetch of moisture arrives into the evening hours. It’s here where winds could become slightly breezy, where gusts in the Anchorage Bowl could be up to 25 mph. This will likely hold temperatures in the upper 40s through a good part of the night. ....

Monday, May 10 Morning Weather
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The sun continues to rise earlier and earlier in Southcentral, with May setting the stage for being a fairly seasonal month. Temperatures have consistently warmed into the low to mid 50s and that trend will continue through the rest of this week. It’s a huge difference from the warm and sunny end to April, as we seemed to have backtracked in the weather department.
Clouds have already moved back into Southcentral, with coastal showers being reported. Most of the activity will stay to our south. A low in the Gulf of Alaska will continue to keep the chance for showers through the day into Tuesday. While much of Southcentral along and north of the Anchorage Bowl will stay dry, an isolated shower can’t be ruled out into the evening hours. ....

Curious Alaska: What happened to hot air ballooning in Anchorage?

Question:
When I first moved to Anchorage, one would regularly see hot air balloons dotting the skies around Anchorage and Eagle River. Now, they’re gone. What happened? Was there some change in regulations, or in insurance? What would need to be done to bring them back?
Curious Alaska: For a time, Anchorage was hot air balloon heaven. Then cocaine and insurance costs ruined everything.
Well, not exactly. But the tale of what happened to hot air ballooning in Anchorage reflects broader change in a young city.
Anchorage’s balloon days seem to have commenced in the 1970s. Mike Bauwens thinks he brought the first hot air balloon to Anchorage, around 1976. ....
