Several Anchorage mayoral candidates will discuss a series of topics during an online public forum Wednesday evening that focuses on creating a “healthy and sustainable” future for the city.
The discussion will be centered on Anchorage’s parks, trails, climate and its economy. Participating candidates are Anna Anthony, Jeffrey Brown, Forrest Dunbar, Bill Evans, Bill Falsey, Heather Herndon, George Martinez, Mike Robbins and Joe Westfall.
The forum runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and will be held over Zoom and livestreamed on Facebook, according to the event page. It is being sponsored by a coalition of nonprofit organizations, including the Anchorage Park Foundation, the Anchorage Downtown Partnership, the Anchorage Economic Development Corp., NAACP of Anc ....

Anchorage businesses say getting COVID-19 under control is a top priority as the city struggles to recover from the pandemic, and they list Anchorage’s oft-criticized regulations as a lesser impediment to business growth, according to a survey released Wednesday by the Anchorage Economic Development Corp.
The coronavirus pandemic loomed large over the annual survey and economic forecast, prepared for the development corporation by the McKinley Research Group, formerly the McDowell Group. The reports predict job growth as the city moves into the recovery phase, and few businesses surveyed said they were shutting down entirely. But the reports also predict fewer jobs would come back than have been lost, and long-term issues like the state’s overall economy remain challenges even as the pandemic improves. ....

Chugach Electric Association’s $1 billion acquisition of Anchorage Municipal Light & Power has begun yielding the first savings for ratepayers, and
customers should see the impact on their bills starting this month, Chugach Electric officials said.
That reduction will more than reverse a bump in costs (enacted before the acquisition) that 23,000 former
ML&P
ratepayers saw in autumn, officials said. They have now joined about 70,000 Chugach Electric ratepayers under a single system.
Rates have moved downward since the Oct. 30 ML&P acquisition, said Arthur Miller,
executive vice president for regulatory and external affairs at Chugach Electric.
The reduced rates went into effect on Jan. 1 and should be showing up on January bills, Miller said. ....

Even the main players in a new, business-leaning COVID-19 nonprofit admit it seems like a strange time to form a group with a mission centered on staying safe during the coronavirus pandemic.
Two vaccines just got rolled out. Alaska’s daily case counts have dropped to lows not seen since October. Hospitalizations of people with COVID-19 are down.
That’s just why the Conquer COVID Coalition is important now, says Jared Kosin, who heads up a statewide hospital association and serves as a co-chair of the new group.
“This is a critical point in the pandemic. We all, for the first time, have a sense of hope,” Kosin said Tuesday, the same day Anchorage officials announced that the city would relax some pandemic restrictions on businesses starting Friday. “It’s really easy to become complacent right now because it doesn’t feel like COVID is as scary, it doesn’t feel as threatening.” ....
