PHOENIX Piedra Vista High School’s Lanae Billy scored seven points in overtime and helped New Mexico Elite defeat Native Soldiers, 63-55, in Saturday’s final of the girls NABI national championship. New Mexico Elite defended the Native American Basketball Invitational title it won in 2019 after last year’s tournament was canceled due to COVID-19. Billy, who was named tournament MVP, helped New Mexico avenge an earlier 64-62 loss to the Oklahoma-based Native Soldiers in the double-elimination event. Members of the boys and girls championship teams received tickets to Saturday’s NBA Finals game in Phoenix. Volcano Vista teammates Jaelyn Bates and Natalia Chavez are members of New Mexico Elite, which is coached by Barry Bates, Jaelyn’s father. ....
Hannah’s roots with the Lobos don’t stop there. As a middle schooler, Hannah did individual training sessions with former Clovis High and UNM women’s star Antiesha Brown, whom she credits for helping to expand her basketball skill set. “I went to a lot of UNM games and Antiesha Brown was my favorite player,” Hannah Robbins said in a phone interview. “I admired her game and I learned a lot from her. We worked on shooting and she taught me the Euro-step, which is something I use a lot.” Brown, who played professionally in Europe after graduating from UNM in 2015, laughed when told of the glowing review. A 1,000-point scorer in college, Brown now works in real estate sales in Albuquerque. ....

On the same day, the state was staging fall sports in the form of state soccer finals, winter sports in the form of basketball, and the start of spring sports. That kind of confluence had never before occurred. Or, maybe it was April 1 that underlined this point with more clarity, with prep football played inside University Stadium, part of a five-games-in-three days “bowl game” experiment by the New Mexico Activities Association in lieu of an actual football postseason. ....
