The heat domebaking vast swaths of the U.S. and Canada has put the dangers of extreme heat on display. It points to the need for urgent adaptation so that cities don’t overheat, and that means reducing the urban heat island. Absent planting more trees, there may be other solutions to help keep cities cooler as the climate crisis worsens.
Pavement Technology Inc. created a spray-on treatment for pavement, called A.R.A.-1 Ti, which it says can lower its temperature. Developed in collaboration with Louisiana State University researchers, the spray’s exact makeup is a trade secret, but it’s based on titanium oxide, a compound used in many sunscreens, white paints, and pharmaceuticals. Titanium dioxide is a photocatalyst, meaning ultraviolet rays activate the compound’s electrons, which absorb and disperse light and heat. ....

County starts roads project

Pavement Technology, Inc. has begun treating roads on Big Pine Key that were resurfaced in 2016 as part of the Cudjoe Wastewater Improvement Project.
The project should take approximately three to four weeks to complete, weather permitting. This treatment will extend the life of the pavement up to eight years. The project will not take place on U.S. 1 and will not affect traffic along U.S. 1, Monroe County government spokeswoman Kristen Livengood said.
During the treatment period, the road will not be accessible to vehicular traffic for approximately 30 minutes. Access for emergency vehicles will remain available and the contractor will work to minimize inconvenience to residents. The contractor will also place signs the day before in the neighborhoods scheduled to be treated. ....
