Juanita Craft’s legacy lives on in South Dallas and NAACP youth

Dallas natives have described Juanita Craft as an icon who had great influence on the Civil Rights Movement. In an effort to keep her name and legacy alive, local groups have committed to restoring her home where she taught youth about civil rights during a time of racial tension and unrest, while a local youth group has committed to carrying mission on the to the next generation.

On Feb. 9, 1902, in Round Rock, Juanita Craft was born and her legacy began.
Her work in the Dallas community as a civil rights advocate and a politician coined her as one of the most influential activists in her community, according to Craft’s biography. ....

Members of the Texas Organizing project joined a rally calling on AT&T to stop donating to the state s GOP leaders over legislation in Austin that would limit ballot access.
Voting rights advocates gathered outside of AT&T’s corporate headquarters in downtown Dallas on Thursday to call on the company to stop donating to lawmakers who want to limit voting access.
AT&T is one of several Texas companies in activists crosshairs. The rally was part of a coordinated statewide strategy by progressive groups to enlist Texas’ largest corporations in a fight against legislation that would make it harder to vote. ....

He said church services will remain virtual and continue to urge people to wear masks.
Haynes church is located in the southern part of Dallas, which has ZIP codes considered to be the most vulnerable for COVID-19 illness and deaths.
So in honor of the members lives who have been lost, in honor of those who have suffered because of COVID, I believe it’s my responsibility to do all we can to keep our membership, our community safe and in doing so we have to make the hard decision (to remain virtual) because it is a hard decision to not gather until we reach a point where it’s safe for all of us and right now, we are far from that, Haynes said. ....
