Our Mission
WHQR Public Media s mission is to offer news, music, entertainment and interaction to expand knowledge, encourage artistic appreciation, engage our community and promote civil discourse.
Our History
WHQR Public Radio set up shop in 1984, in a converted bar in a strip mall in Wilmington. Founded by opera lovers concerned about the disappearance of the Metropolitan Opera on local airways, the station thrived by truly becoming a community station, supported and staffed by public radio lovers. Friends of the Opera, the original name of the founders, became Friends of Public Radio, Inc.
Ten years to the day it first went on the air, the station moved to a new home, the renovated Warwick Building in Wilmington s historic downtown. We added new studios, a custom-designed library and gallery for performances and exhibits, all warmed by blasted brick and mellow pine floors.
