Work begins on all-weather pitch


Work is set to start on the long-awaited all-weather pitch for the Ward River Valley Park in Swords.
Fingal County Council has announces that enabling works are starting on the new all-weather sports pitch at Ward River Valley Regional Park.
The new third generation synthetic all-weather pitch will be a full sized GAA and soccer pitch, similar to the facility at Bremore Regional Park in Balbriggan.
The new floodlit facility will be accompanied by car, coach and bicycle parking to service the needs of the pitch users and to improve access to the park.
The first phase of works will see contractors carrying out limited removal of some screen tree planting to facilitate works and create space for the pitch. Following consultation with the public, care was taken with the layout of the pitch to ensure that the landmark mature tree on site could be retained. Approximately 330m2 of screen planting will be removed and the works will be completed by the end of February. ....

Conan the humanitarian


The League of Ireland football legend that is Swords man, Conan Byrne has received yet another accolade in his storied career as he was named the winner of the Liam Tuohy Special Merit Award at this year s Soccer Writers of Ireland Awards.
This special award went to Conan in recognition of several acts of charity and kindness which included raising more than €13,000 for the Irish Cancer Society in a marathon walk to every League of Ireland ground in Dublin, and raising spirits across the country by arranging conversations between a host of League of Ireland personalities and their supporters.
The former Sporting Fingal, Shelbourne and St Patrick s Athletic player, took full advantage of some unscheduled time off from work back in March as the country got locked down due to the global pandemic by embarking on a novel fundraising event for a charity particularly hit by the outbreak of the coronavirus. ....
