New Bedford Man Desperately Seeking Kidney Donation
Carlos and June Riquinha have been a couple since they met at the age of 14. He had entered a talent show at the Jireh Swift School on Lund s Corner New Bedford. June was in the audience with her grandmother the first time she saw him. They got married as soon as they turned 18.
Carlos entered the landscaping industry in the 1980s and has been working at it ever since, although his work drifted away from the field and into the office more as he progressed through the years.
About a year and a half ago, Carlos was diagnosed with kidney failure. In order to live, he would need to go on kidney dialysis immediately. The treatment can be brutal and isn t a sustainable solution for the rest of his life. ....

United Way meets, exceeds fundraising goal


United Way of Tompkins County extends a sincere thank you to approximately 2,384 donors who contributed to meeting this year’s annual campaign goal of $1.5 million.  The money raised this year will fund over 100 human services programs and support over 120 agencies through grants, programs and direct support to agencies of donors’ choosing. Research shows that United Way of Tompkins County programs impacted 1 in 5 residents pre-pandemic; that number has grown by an estimated 25% in the past twelve months.
This year’s campaign is lead by volunteer Campaign Co-chairs Jean McPheeters and Dominick Recckio. Answer: Yes, every March since 2002 Meals-on-Wheels programs across the country join together in celebrating March for Meals. This national campaign, spearheaded by Meals on Wheels America, commemorates the historic day in March 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years of age and older.
Here in Forsyth County, Senior Services celebrates “March for Meals” by spreading awareness of its nutrition programs — Meals-on-Wheels and Senior Lunch (a group meal program), and the growing need for the community’s involvement in them.

Nonprofit registration ends soon for day of giving


Nonprofit registration for the sixth annual East Texas Giving Day concludes at 5 p.m. March 31. Nonprofits based in or serving one of the 32-counties in the East Texas Communities Foundation service area are encouraged to register to be a part of the online fundraising event.
“Nonprofits have had to adapt to so much over the past year in response to the pandemic,” said Holly McFarlin, public relations director for East Texas Communities Foundation. “For over a year now, they have had to put off many traditional fundraising events like galas and luncheons. East Texas Giving Day takes place all online and provides a perfect fundraising opportunity for nonprofits because it allows a safe place for donors to come and feel that they are still part of a community wide event.” ....
