Environment Bill updates leave green groups doubting UK's commitment to halt nature loss

Environment Bill updates leave green groups doubting UK s commitment to halt nature loss
Some of the UK s biggest nature charities have called amendments made to the Environment Bill this week weakly worded , arguing that they leave loopholes for the UK to backtrack on a commitment to improve nature for the next generation.
The UK s 2019 State of Nature report revealed that most UK species have declined since the 1970s, with 15% now facing extinction
Amendments were made to the Bill on Tuesday (8 June) after it was re-introduced to Parliament following Covid-19-related delays during the last week of May. The changes provide more clarity on a new legally binding target to “halt the decline of wildlife and nature” by the end of the decade, following decades of decline for the majority of native species. ....

A report has warned of a catastrophic decline in freshwater fish, with nearly a third threatened by extinction.
Conservation groups said 80 species were known to have gone extinct, 16 in the last year alone.
Millions of people rely on freshwater fish for food and as a source of income through angling and the pet trade.

Next Extinction Target: World's Freshwater Fishes

Feb 23, 2021 12:33 AM EST
They have survived for hundreds of millions of years. Still, according to a recent study reported, many of the world s freshwater megafauna, including sumo-sized stingrays, gigantic catfish, and other freshwater fishes, may soon be on the verge of extinction.
A report warned of a catastrophic collapse in freshwater fish population, with about a third of them threatened with extinction. Conservation organizations said that 80 animals, 16 in the last year alone, were believed to have gone extinct.

The global extinction in freshwater megafauna, including fish, rodents, amphibians, and mammals, have been quantified for the first time by researchers, and the findings paint a bleak picture. The global stocks of these freshwater giants have decreased by almost 90 percent over four decades since 1970, twice as much as reducing vertebrate populations on land or in the oceans. ....
