In the Glades, health officials couldn t give the COVID vaccine away
While senior citizens from Boca Raton to Jupiter have been clamoring for the coronavirus vaccine, those in Palm Beach County’s rural western communities have been less enthusiastic.
When initial calls were made to schedule appointments for 300 residents of the Belle Glade area, one accepted, said County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay, who represents the sprawling farming area where Blacks make up nearly 60% of the population.
However, officials from the county’s health care district said that in the past week, attitudes have changed.
As of Friday morning, 432 people over the age of 65 had been vaccinated, said Robin Kish, spokeswoman for the taxpayer-funded district that operates the only hospital in the Glades. ....
